Liars Contest and the List

Some claim that Alaska is so cold, whole conversations freeze until the deafening spring thaw. That claim won honorable mention in a Liars Contest because it’s almost believable. The concept is certainly valid for blogs, emails, and writings because long after the thoughts are put out  for consideration they can be discovered and considered and they’ll be as fresh as the day they were keyed in.

Meanwhile, the rest of life goes forward. Yesterday I asked two of the grand kids, among the rare ones that live in the same town as me, to consider the music on my device and list from it the 20 songs they each wanted to hear more of.

When I claimed the lists, they had varying quality. The twelve year old wrote the name of each song and the associated artist. I was able to locate every song.

The eight year old wrote the name of the song, more or less accurately and nothing else. In fact, he wrote the names in English, Cyrillic and Finnish, the same as they show up in the title on the device. I found all but three of his songs.

As I went over each list with the author, the two year old wrote furiously on a paper that she presented to me as her list as soon as I finished with the others. It was the cutest thing! She can’t write a word. But the gibber-text was in column order just like a real list and she was very happy to do what the older kids had done.

It makes me wonder. How closely do my efforts here with this blog parallel hers with the list? We both write in earnest, though for different reasons. There’s no guarentee any of it will ever get read or, even if it is, comprehended.

Either way, I’m keeping the lists. They’ll forever be a momento of a lovely moment that I cherish being part of : )
