32/36dfev Swap

The Europa came with a French made Solex Carburetor and I liked it. But that was before I discovered that it was  misbehaving and I couldn’t find a kit to rebuild it. It was a hazard from the start. I’m glad it’s off the car. I’ve replaced it with a Weber progressive carburetor called a 32/36 dfav.

The Weber changed everything. Now the car has gobs of power comparatively. It wants to go!

I still don’t have it fully dialed in, but today I made progress on the buck and surge problem which I’ve traced vacuum leaks at the spacer blocks that raise the carburetor enough for the linkage to clear the motor.

There are two blocks and neither is perfectly flat. Today I removed them and sanded the surfaces until they were flatter. My method was to lay masonite on the garage floor and then a little sheet of glass on that to provide a flat surface to sand on.

Then I robbed one of my sketch pads of it’s cardboard and made three paper gaskets because I’d already compressed the ones I made this last weekend.

Thicker paper meant more compressability and between the sanding and the gaskets it worked. After less than ten miles the bucking and hesitation was returning so I pulled into the garage and tightened the carburetor nuts again.

One or both of the spacer blocks will be replaced with a new one that is on it’s way.

Here is the fabulous replacement for the Solex:

Until I come up with a better answer, this zip tie is there to keep the accelerator linkage from dropping off the pivot.
